About the General Strike for Palestine

General Strike for Palestine is an initiative that aims to make the next global general strike for Gaza successful. It also paves the way for future general strikes for Palestine.

It is a place for coordination between organizations, initiatives, unions, etc. so that the next general strike(s) can focus on certain countries and sectors to be most effective. It also helps individuals to find and join already existing groups or support those groups financially or otherwiese.

What is a general strike?

A general strike is when people stop working. They refuse their labor until their demands are met. As a result, relevant sectors in a country slow down significantly and companies or politicians need to react. Research has shown that general strikes should last at least two weeks or until the demands are met and need a participation of at least 3,5% to be successful.

Why is a general strike necessary?

A general strike disrupts the daily life in a country and can deeply affect the economy. Strikes and protests in specific sectors (dock workers, airport personal) have shown to be very effective and can be the beginning of bigger actions. Sooner or later, those in power have to take action and react to the demands being made by the citizens on strike.

To influence the political and military decisions of the Israeli government, Israel’s closest allies and supporters must be targeted: The governments of the USA, Canada, the UK, Germany, France and other European/Western countries. While those governments can repress protests and ignore petitions, letters and boycotts, big general strikes will draw their attention. Those governments are the ones who can exert pressure on the Israeli government.

How does it work?

There have been calls to action for global general strikes for Gaza or Palestine in the past. Nevertheless, they were often announced too spontaneously, didn’t last long, had few participants and people on strike lacked a support network of legal and financial aid. As a result, there weren’t enough participants to make the strikes effective.

We don’t need another global strike with people striking in many different countries. All we need are:

  • people from around the world who can support those people on strike with donations and raise awareness
  • well-prepared and resilient general strikes in specific countries and sectors to build up economic and political pressure
  • support for wildcat strikes (work stoppage undertaken by employees without the consent of their respective unions)
